Plant Problem Guide
Brown Leaf Tips
Brown crispy leaf tips are one of the most common houseplant issues. They are usually caused by dryness, watering inconsistencies or environmental stress rather than disease.
Dry Air
Low humidity can cause leaf edges and tips to dry out, especially on tropical plants.
Underwatering
Soil becoming too dry repeatedly can lead to crispy brown edges and curling leaves.
Mineral Build-Up
Excess salts from fertiliser or hard water can sometimes cause tip burn over time.
Root Stress
Compacted soil or struggling roots may prevent the plant from taking up moisture properly.
Quick Checks
- Are only the tips affected while the rest of the leaf stays green?
- Does the plant sit near heating or dry airflow?
- Is the soil becoming completely dry between waterings?
- Are older leaves affected more than new ones?
- Is there white residue on the soil surface or pot?
What To Do First
- Keep watering more consistent without overwatering.
- Increase humidity around tropical plants where suitable.
- Flush the soil occasionally to reduce mineral build-up.
- Trim brown tips if desired using clean scissors.
- Check whether the soil has become compacted or stale.
Commonly Affected Plants
- Calathea
- Peace Lily
- Alocasia
- Dracaena
- Fern varieties
