Plant Problem Guide

Thrips

Thrips are tiny sap-sucking pests that can damage leaves, distort new growth and spread quickly between houseplants if left untreated.

Silver Marks

Thrips often leave silvery patches or streaks where they have fed on the leaf surface.

Black Dots

Tiny black specks on leaves can be thrip waste and are a common sign of activity.

Distorted Growth

New leaves may emerge twisted, damaged or unable to unfurl properly.

Tiny Insects

Adult thrips are usually very small, narrow and fast-moving, making them easy to miss.

Quick Checks

  • Are there silver or pale patches on the leaves?
  • Do you see tiny black dots or marks?
  • Is new growth damaged or misshapen?
  • Do tiny insects move quickly when disturbed?
  • Are multiple nearby plants showing symptoms?

What To Do First

  • Isolate affected plants from healthy ones.
  • Inspect the front and back of leaves carefully.
  • Remove heavily damaged leaves where appropriate.
  • Wipe leaves down to help reduce visible pests.
  • Monitor nearby plants regularly as thrips spread easily.

Why Plants Become Vulnerable

  • Dry indoor conditions can make pests harder to control.
  • Plants under stress are often more vulnerable.
  • New plants can accidentally introduce pests into collections.
  • Thrips can hide deep inside unfurling leaves and stems.
  • Early signs are often mistaken for mechanical damage.
