Pothos Care Guide

Pothos are easy, trailing houseplants that cope well in most homes. With the right light, watering routine, and airy soil, they grow beautifully with very little fuss.

Light

Bright, indirect light is best, but Pothos can tolerate lower light. Variegated types need brighter light to keep their colour.

Water

Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Pothos are forgiving, but dislike sitting wet for too long.

Soil

Use a free-draining, airy mix to help protect roots from staying soggy.

Best Position

Place your Pothos in bright, indirect light for the strongest growth. It can handle shadier rooms, but growth may become slower and less full.

Watering Routine

  • Check the soil before watering.
  • Water thoroughly, then let excess drain away.
  • Allow the top layer of soil to dry between waterings.
  • Water less often in winter.

Humidity & Temperature

Pothos are not fussy and usually manage well in normal home humidity. Keep away from cold draughts, very hot radiators, and sudden temperature changes.

Feeding

Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, especially during colder months.

Common Problems

  • Yellow leaves: often caused by overwatering or poor drainage.
  • Brown edges: can come from underwatering, dry air, or too much direct sun.
  • Leggy vines: usually means the plant needs brighter indirect light or a trim.
  • Fading variegation: move the plant to a brighter spot out of direct sun.

Pruning & Propagation

Trim long vines to keep your Pothos looking fuller. Cut just below a node and place the cutting in water or soil to root.

Regular trimming encourages bushier growth and gives you easy cuttings to grow or share.
